The Road Rarely Traveled

Most people aren't familiar with The Battle of Verdun, the longest and most devastating battle fought between the French and Germans armies in World War I. I didn't know the significance of Verdun until World War I moved into my awareness and I started learning about this place. I discovered the description of Cote 304 was similar to the "wood line" that I had already described in RESURGAM. It seemed my writer's eye had already caught a glimpse of Cote 304. I had to learn more about this place - what significance did it hold? That's how the forgotten soldiers of World War I stepped into the story. I had already been to France twice before, and knew I would return again. But I never imagined I would go there to troop across World War I battlefields and explore underground forts in Verdun.
